RUSH HOUR SERIES ACQUIRED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD 12th October 2009 The Rush Hour artworks, premiered at the 2008 Liverpool Biennial, have been acquired by the University of Salford.
Ten artworks have been installed in University House, the spectacularly refurbished HQ for the Directorate of Student Life, which officially opened in a launch ceremony on 12 October 2009. The Rush Hour artworks complement the contemporary interior of University House and are a valuable addition to the large collection of art that the University of Salford owns and displays in its numerous buildings. Mark Willcox said: "The Rush Hour artworks explore crowd dynamics in urban contexts and, in that sense, are a contemporary revisiting of the themes that inspired the Salford-born artist, LS Lowry, whose work is also in the University of Salford's collection. It is this 'nod' to history, using modern-day technology to generate a contemporary expressive visual idiom, which I hope makes my work part of a continuum that is relevant to the University". Liz Bromley, Director of Student Life, said: "I am delighted that we were able to procure such vibrant and compelling pieces of art for our new premises. The University of Salford has a great interest in the artistic heritage of the North West, and it is a real statement to have these works of art as focal points in our newly refurbished building - the University's hotspot for students - and now for art too". |
